Study unveils the potential of HBC’s ProGo® bioactive peptides to regulate glucose and improve metabolic health

New research has revealed that Hofseth BioCare’s ProGo® has the potential to combat risk factors of metabolic diseases, including diabetes.

The study, published in peer-reviewed journal Marine Drugs by MDPI, uncovered that the fresh Atlantic salmon-derived peptides possessed potent glucoregulatory properties that are associated with improved metabolism, which can lead to healthy ageing and improved energy.

Powerful potency of bioactive peptides

Previous clinical studies of salmon protein hydrolysate (SPH) have consistently found that it improved energy levels and resulted in a 6-7% weight loss in overweight subjects, improved biomarkers of health and a consistent (3-6%) reduction in fasting blood glucose (FPG).

This suggested that SPH could be effective at improving glucose metabolism, which prompted the study into its potential antidiabetic properties. The latest findings confirmed that the glucoregulatory peptides within ProGo® prompted dipeptidyl peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) inhibition and improved glucose uptake into muscles – both of which augment the action of insulin, boost energy levels and increase satiety.

This study further characterises the bioactivity of the peptides in ProGo®, building on the bank of evidence demonstrating its role in delivering better nutrient and iron metabolism and opening up new opportunities for nutraceutical manufacturers in the metabolic health and active lifestyle space.

Showing promise as a preventative measure

Commenting on the findings, Dr. Crawford Currie, Head of Medical R&D at Hofseth BioCare, said: “Metabolic abnormalities are linked to a whole host of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer and neurodegenerative disease. On a population level, even modest improvements in a person’s metabolic risk profile would likely lead to significant reductions in overall human disease burden and healthcare costs.

“Therefore, tackling metabolic dysfunction, with a focus on prevention, is a critically important aspect for improving human health. These latest findings further define marine protein hydrolysates as safe nutritional interventions and add weight to their valuable role in preventative and supportive approaches for managing metabolic disorders.”

Benefits beyond nutrition

ProGo® is an ultra-absorbable bioactive peptide powder, gently released from fresh salmon offcuts. Through HBC's proprietary enzyme process, it yields an exceptional quality product with proven health benefits that bolster energy levels and overall vitality.

As well as promoting healthy iron metabolism and enhancing metabolic efficacy, the ingredient has been shown to support the maintenance of optimal skin health and restore and maintain a healthy balance within the gut immune system. This positions ProGo® as a compelling and effective ingredient that can be tailored for several different market segments, including women's health, gut health, healthy ageing and weight management.
